Fisker Automotive recently announced that it is expanding to accelerate development of its next generation plug-in hybrids, code named Project NINA. Beginning March 1 Fisker Automotive’s global headquarters in Irvine, California will house all design, engineering, sales, marketing, and administrative operations. The company expects the number of new hires to expand dramatically. The three major Detroit-based automakers—Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation (GM), and Chrysler—recently announced significant investments or changes as they move towards more efficient engines and vehicles. With an eye towards reducing fuel consumption and emissions, the companies are retooling some factories and redesigning vehicle powertrains. The first prototype of the production Ampera has received its initial charge of electricity from the newly installed recharging station at Opel’s headquarters. The Ampera extended-range electric vehicle will use the energy stored in its 16 kWh lithium-ion battery to drive the first stage of the 600 kilometers journey from Rüsselsheim, Germany, to the Geneva Motor Show [...] Honda is unveiling its 3R-C all electric concept vehicle in Geneva, alongside the EV-N concept which is makiing its European debut at the show. Both the three-wheeled 3R-C concept, which envisions a single occupant vehicle for zero emission commuting, and the EV-N urban concept, draw on Honda’s vast working knowledge of vehicles utilizing electric motors. Tesla Motors, producer of the world’s only highway-capable EV, is now offering the option of leasing their all electric Roadster and Roaster Coupe. The new program will allow customers to take immediate delivery of a new 2010 Roadster or Roadster Sport with a three year, 30,000 mile contract. The BMW Group is developing BMW Plant Leipzig to produce an electric vehicle and making additional investments in a number of facilities in Bavaria.
